The Marina houses some 200 boats from small cruiser, narrowboats of all sizes to dutch barges, humber keels and ocean going (large) cruisers. Outside the Marina on the riverfront, opposite the large commercial barge moorings is the BW visitor moorings which will take about four 60ft narrowboats. Our friends 60ft narrowboat was moored at the bottom of the marina fairly close to the Tom Pudding lift. The weekend and the first couple days of the week I assisted with maintenance of my friends SR3 (c1978). Although it has been a reliable engine he was experiencing problems with one cylinder - it sounds like it is spitting. The top end of the engine was stripped, injectors out and tested by reconnecting upside down to check that all three apertures were delivering a spray of fuel. We had been warned that there was fibre seal that sits under the injector, and sometimes more than one - if so this alters the height of the injector and as thus how the spray is injected into the engine. On checking we found not one but four fibre seals - we replaced these with one new seal and refitted all of the top end components and fires up the engine, it sounded much better so we took a trip to New Junction, about a 4 mile run, and moored for the night. Good fishing here, lots of perch, reputedly up to 4 pounds, we only however caught small ones. On the return trip to Goole (where we now moored on the BW visitor moorings) the engine still sounded as though it was spitting a little so we decided to clean all of the air inlets, not too difficult to strip one side and found lots of carbon deposits. Refitted all components and fired up the engine, sounded better but would fully try it out on the way to Keadby. Friday 1 September drove to Leeds to pick up our own (Shared Ownership) boat. Part 2 Leeds to Nottingham to follow. Terry and Sue ---
